When it all began…The Birth of NJNS, Inc. …

The date of the first meeting of New Jersey State Student Nurses Association (NJSSNA) was October 22nd, 1952. The purpose of NJSSNA was to aid in the transition of under-graduate nursing students to professional programs and interests. The goal was to prepare nursing students for the assumption of professional responsibilities. At the inception of our organization in 1952, membership totaled only 250 nursing students. As of 2006, NJNS, Inc. membership numbers total into the thousands.

Your NJNS, Inc., Today

In 2006, New Jersey Nursing Students, Inc., formerly known as NJSSNA, is a much stronger organization than it has ever been. NJNS, Inc. holds one of the largest constituencies of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) of all 50 states. Our annual convention is one of the largest state conventions within the national organization; last year’s convention attendance totaled nearly 1500 students. The strength of NJNS, Inc. lies not only in our members, but also in our dedication to the nursing student and the community. Our organization aids in the transition of the whole person from nursing student to professional nurse. This includes taking responsibility for the healthcare of people from all backgrounds and all cultures. NJNS, Inc. has held toy drives to brighten the holiday seasons of underprivileged youngsters, and participates annually in various walkathons and blood drives that support many different communities.

On the national level, NJNS, Inc. has gained recognition from the NSNA for our state newsletter, The Pulsebeat. In 1998, The Pulsebeat won the “Most Outstanding Newsletter” award for the second time in three years. The Pulsebeat also won the honor of being indexed in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL). In 1998 NJNS, Inc. received the NSNS National Award for “Highest Number of Community Health Projects” in the country. In recent years, NJNS, Inc. worked with two states, New Hampshire and Delaware, to guide these states’ nursing students toward the success NJNS, Inc. has achieved.

Our goal as an organization is to help mold the future professionals of the nursing field. Only through involvement can we implement change. You are the future leaders of the nursing profession. Professionalism and Leadership begin here with NJNS, Inc!

NJNS Deans & Directors Special Award

One of the many rewards of active participation in New Jersey Nursing Students, Inc. is the ability to recognize a Dean, Director or a faculty member from one of our state nursing schools at our annual awards program.

New Jersey Nursing Students, Inc. has developed an award to honor Deans/Directors, and faculty members who show excellence in nursing education and support of student’s professional development.

If you have been touched by a Dean, Director, or faculty member who has made significant contribution during your nursing education, who has demonstrated a passion for contributing to student education, professional development or has shown leadership in the field of nursing though participation in professional organizations, we would love to consider honoring them with our special award.
